For better or for worse, the San Diego Padres are going all-in.
The team has acquired superstar outfielder Juan Soto along with first baseman Josh Bell, with several key prospects going to the Washington Nationals. The trade was reported just hours ahead of the Major League Baseball trade deadline.
San Diego's latest move comes one day after trading for Milwaukee Brewers closer Josh Hader.
Soto won the 2022 MLB All-Star Home Run Derby and has been on the trade block since rejecting a 15-year, $440 million contract proposal from the Nationals in July. The Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers were said to be in the highest pursuit for Soto in the National League West arms race. Going to Washington will be rookie left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore, top prospect Robert Hassell III, shortstop C.J. Abrams, outfielder James Wood, pitcher Jarlin Susana and possibly veteran first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Soto is currently scheduled to become a free agent after the 2024 season.
