St. Cloud State Sweeps Duluth

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

Nick Perbix celebrates spectacular overtime goal

The St. Cloud State men’s hockey team is starting to pull away in the NCHC. The Huskies swept Minnesota-Duluth this weekend on the shores of Lake Superior, taking three of the first four matchups overall in 2021 from the two-time defending champs.

Junior Defenseman Nick Perbix tallied the game’s only goal late in 3 on 3 overtime. Senior David Hrenak made 28 saves for his 10th career shutout, a school record.

At 9-4, SCSU now has 27 points to lead the nation’s premier conference. The Bulldogs (6-5-2) remain in second, but have played three more games than Omaha and North Dakota; the Mavericks and Sioux haven’t been in action since the pod concluded three weeks ago. It’s likely the conference will send at least four, and possibly five, teams to the NCAA tournament.

In other Minnesota hockey news, after their best start in over 80 years, the No. 1 ranked Golden Gophers suffered their first defeat of the season against Wisconsin, 3-1. Minnesota rebounded with a 5-3 win on Sunday.

Editors Note: The University of Minnesota-Duluth demands a recount of both games this weekend to overturn the results and return the Bulldogs to their rightful position of first place in the NCHC.
