Edinburg Withdraws From Texas High School Playoffs

The repercussions have already gone down in the disturbing incident that became the lead story on major sports outlets overnight. After an emergency school board meeting, it was announced Edinburg High School had been removed from postseason play. The action took place after District Defensive Player of the Year Emmanuel Duron attacked 59-year old referee Fred Gracia, a 27-year officiating veteran.

Duron had been disqualified for consecutive personal fouls, shoving down an opposing lineman and attempting to rough the quarterback after the whistle. Duron also reportedly had words with Gracia before the attack. Duron spent the night in jail, charged with Class A assault with bail set at $10,000. Edinburg won the play-in game against rival Pharr-San Juan-Alamo High School 35-21.

Both the Texas Association of Sports Officials and the University Interscholastic League plan to launch investigations into the incident.
