The shadow of 'the previous guy' still looms as a freshman Ohio Representative is being pressured to step down. Former Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez has been censored by his own party along with calls for his resignation. The Cleveland congressman is the eighth of 10 representatives who voted for the impeachment of Donald Trump to be censored by state or local parties. The censures are spearheaded by a committee that called the former president's second impeachment trial meritless, unprecedented, unconstitutional and purposeless.
Jane Timkin, running for Ohio's senate seat being vacated by Rob Portman, initially defended Gonzalez but changed course, citing loyalty and fundraising efforts towards Trump. Other Ohio politicians label the 36-year old Gonzalez as a traitor. The lobbying occurs by GOP leaders attempting to unify the party in the aftermath of the Jan. 6 insurrection.
