Rep. Tom Emmer Wins Re-Election, Leads GOP Gains

Emmer easily wins re-election in Minnesota's Sixth Congressional District. As National Republican Congressional Committee Chairman, Emmer also led a team of successful Election Day candidates that will represent one of the GOP's strongest recent classes. Other incoming freshman include Byron Donalds (Florida), Maria Elvira Salazar (Florida) and Ashley Hinson (Iowa). Salazar defeated former University of Miami president and University of Wisconsin chancellor Donna Shalala. Both Salazar and Hinson previously worked in television news. Michelle Fischbach won Minnesota's Seventh District, unseating 15-term Rep. Collin Peterson. A former lieutenant governor and state senator, Fischbach benefited from Donald Trump's endorsement and popularity in western Minnesota.

The NRCC fielded 94 women, 75 minorities and 107 veterans as candidates, it is projected that as many as 19 women will win election.

With the House gains as well as likely holding on to the U.S. Senate, the GOP stifled the 'blue wave' previously predicted.
